CV personal statement: 12 examples and the method to write yours

January 19, 2026 7 min read

The three lines at the top of your CV decide whether recruiters keep reading. The method, 12 examples by profile and the mistakes that kill a personal statement

The personal statement — also called a professional profile or summary — sits at the very top of the CV, just under your contact details. Its job is brutal and simple: in three lines, make the recruiter want to read the rest. Done well, it doubles the time spent on your application; done badly, it reads as filler and the document gets skimmed.

The good news is that a strong statement is not a matter of talent. It is a fill-in-the-blanks structure, combined with the right keywords from the advert. Here is the method, then twelve examples you can adapt to your own profile.

The three-part formula that always works

Every effective personal statement answers three questions in order: who you are professionally, what you have proven, and what you are looking for. One sentence each, no adjectives you cannot back up, and a number wherever one exists.

The fill-in template

Job title with X years' experience, specialised in [field], I [quantified achievement]. Now seeking [target role] in [sector or region]. Three lines maximum, no empty adjectives.

Account manager with 5 years in B2B software, specialised in the manufacturing sector. Grew a €1.2M portfolio by 22% in two years. Looking for a key-account role in industrial tech.

Notice what the example does not do: it does not say motivated, dynamic or passionate. Those words describe everyone and therefore no one. Replace each of them with a proof.

Tailoring the statement to each advert

Keep one master statement per profile, then adjust two elements per application: the target role, which must echo the advert's exact job title, and one keyword that matches the posting's priority. This is the same reflex described in our guide to CV keywords from job adverts — reuse their words, not your synonyms.

  • If the advert says project management office, do not write project coordination.
  • If the advert leads with sustainability, mention your ISO 14001 experience in the statement.
  • If the advert targets a region, name the region — recruiters filter on it more than you think.

The mistakes that kill a personal statement

  • Writing in the third person: it reads distant and costs space. Use the first person, implied.
  • Listing what you want instead of what you bring: the recruiter buys value, not aspirations.
  • Recycling the same statement for every application — recruiters of the same sector notice.
  • Going past four lines: anything longer is an excerpt from a cover letter, and ours on the complete cover letter method shows where that content belongs.

On HightCV, the AI assistant drafts a first version of your statement from your actual experience — you then refine the wording until it sounds like you.

Frequently asked questions

+How long should a CV personal statement be?

Two to three lines, around 40 to 60 words. Anything longer belongs in the cover letter.

+First or third person?

First person, implied — no I at the start of every sentence, but never he/she. It reads more direct and saves space.

+Do I need one for every CV?

Yes. It is the highest-leverage section: the only part every recruiter reads in full. An exception is a one-page academic CV, where a research summary can replace it.

+Can I use the same statement for several jobs?

Only if the roles are identical in title and sector. Otherwise retarget the last line to each advert — it takes two minutes and measurably raises reply rates.
